Backhand Consistency Clinic
Feedback on Nov 21 Backhand Consistency Clinic
1. What did I learn?
Review of position and reminder to reduce swing speed in order to improve consistency. Also to get low, swing from under the ball.
2. Impressions and/or Experience
So much fun with 5 other players. One I’ve been in clinic / practice with 3x in the past 5 days and four new people to say “hi” to when I see them again. The structured warm up 2 days in a row feels great. And then 60 min of intentional backhand practice. Awesome
Answers to 3 & 4 are copy / pasted from previous. Nothing new to add other than more exclamation points 😎
3. Quality of lesson
As always, the quality of the lesson was superb. Coach introduced our objective to start with and then moved us along in ways tailored to each of our learning needs and tendencies. The added bonus for me was modification of the lesson to suit an injury I’m recovering from. I can’t play games yet so it is fantastic to have the opportunity to maintain and improve specific skills while I wait.
4. How do lessons influence your decision to be a member of our club?
I came to Cedarbrae for the convenient location, the frequency and flexibility of the Recreational Play on weekdays, the ease of access, and the simplicity of sign up. I thought that was enough until I started the T300 Training Group in Jan 2024. I’m loving the skill development and the improvement in my game. The lessons and practice are what keep me at Cedarbrae. I’m less sure about the Rec and Rated Play offerings going forward. I’ll have to check it all out again once I am cleared to return to game play. My first preference would be to get to do lessons & practice & game play at the same club. It’s just less chaotic than juggling multiple memberships. That said, I’m quite sure I will follow Coach if / when he moves on. Or stick with the lessons & practice at Cedarbrae with Coach, but play elsewhere should the contentious behavior of some members continue on much longer. I’m not willing to continue to pay money but experience this tension for much longer.
257.05 Volleying with Directional Control
Hi Coach,
Here are my answers to your questions.
I learned the importance of aiming down and how working on my aim vertically is even more helpful than aiming horizontally.
This is the third lesson I have taken. I always learn something new to put into practice.
The group size has always been nice and small so it is great for asking questions and getting some personal feedback. I also like that there is a lot of time and repetition just to practice the skill instead of trying to teach a lot of news things all in one session.
I am an adult athlete who plays another pretty competitive sport and I appreciate the opportunity for lessons and practice. Often times as adult athletes we only have the opportunity to play games. It is difficult to improve or even maintain our skill level as we get older if there is never a time to practice skills.
Let me know if you need any other information.
Response from Brent Johner
Hey Jodi. Thank you for the feedback. I agree with you that having an opportunity to learn and practice is an important part of the Cedarbrae experience. Looking forward to our next lesson.
A100 Intro to Pickleball
Thanks Coach for reaching out for feedback.
The most impactful lesson I learned was to trust the process and keep my mouth shut – LOL 😆, just kidding.
My previous pickle ball experience is a weekly drop in opportunity to play at my church. I have informally learned the game rules/scoring by observation, playing, trial and error.
One new thing I learned was about how the angle of my paddle can control the direction of the ball. Also that less is best, to just push the ball with your paddle rather than “bam”.
I was not aware of the rule to complete two rally’s before you can utilize the volley technique. Also when doing so, one needs to make sure you are clear of “the kitchen” when volleying the ball.
I did not completely understand the rules related to when the ball hits the net and where it lands makes the call for point or loss of serve.
Rules related to who starts the serve, at the beginning of the game and who do you serve – the receiver is diagonal. One must clear the kitchen and keep ball within bounds.
Finally I appreciated hearing the rationale for having the server and their partner positioned towards the back and the rationale for having the partner of the receiver to be positioned forward, to be ready near the kitchen to assist his/her partner in rallying the ball.
Basically I just want to have fun and fit in. I have autism so learning rules and etiquette of behavior is important to me as not to offend and be able enjoy the game.
Camilo and I hope to play at Cedarbrae. We had already joined the club and have paid for a punch card. We plan to sign up to play at the beginner recreation level.
Once again, Thanks for your help and support. Ann

Hey Ann. It was my pleasure. Always happy to help introduce Cedarbrae’s pickleball program to actual residents of Cedarbrae. Looking forward to working with you and Camillo again soon.
A100 Intro to Pickleball
1. What did you learn in today’s lesson?
Clarification of basic rules, tips on holding the paddle, it is a lot of fun but I need lots of practice.
2. Please describe your impressions and/or experience.
Slow pace allowed for digesting the learning. Clear instructions and comfortable environment to ask questions.
3. Please describe the quality of the lesson.
Superb quality
4. How do lessons influence your decision to be a member of our club?
Already signed up but have concerns about the lack of opportunities for beginners to play. I know it will take a lot of practice for me to get the hand eye coordination which can only be accomplished through practice.
C200.06 How to Block Hard Shots at the Net
1. What did you learn in today’s lesson?
Today’s lesson was blocking hard shots at net. We used the ball machine and then each other to work through several drills. I learned specific form and technique. All new to me as I don’t have a lot of racquet sport experience.
2. Please describe your impressions and/or experience.
I definitely came away with knowledge I did not have and demonstrating new skills I am proud of. I had fun! We laughed at ourselves and each other. Very positive experience for 7:30 Sunday morning!!
3. Please describe the quality of the lesson.
As always, I found the quality of the lesson to be superb. Coach introduced our objective to start with and then moved us along in ways tailored to each of our learning needs and (bad) habits. The added bonus for me was modification of the lesson to suit an injury I’m recovering from. I can’t play games yet so it is fantastic to have the opportunity to maintain and improve specific skills while I wait.
