Is this Why People are Afraid of Ratings?

Posted on December 6, 2024

I came across this today.

I have been thinking about it since 5:00am.

I’m now wondering if this is why some people are so anxious about ratings and so opposed to their use in pickleball.

Is there a status hierarchy dimension here that I have been oblivious too?

To me, it makes perfect sense to create a league hierarchy based on ratings because, in my mind, ratings measure merit.

If you want to play in a 3.0-3.5 level league today, your rating should be 3.0-3.5 today.

To my autistic brain, this seems obvious. Numbers don’t lie.

But many neurotypical people seem to be mortified by their low ratings and insist on being included in 3.0-3.5 even when they are rated at 2.9.

They will say to me something like: I know that my rating is 2.9 but you know that I am really a 3.25.

Honestly … I don’t. If you rating is 2.9 today, then today you are a 2.9.

Maybe you were 3.25 last month, but today you are not.

Is this why I don’t get why people get so wound up about ratings?

Is it a status hierarchy thing?

Text me your thoughts, please.
