Rather than jumping into a critique partnership relationship with both feet, I prefer to start with a chapter swap.
We exchange a single chapter, ask for feedback on a specific issue, set a deadline, and then follow through.
If either of us misses the deadline, that’s it. No more chapter swaps.
But if it works out and we are both happy (and in agreement), we try another chapter swap. Again, clearly identifying the area we are seeking feedback on.
