Description: How and why to serve to exploit opponents’ weaknesses and generate short returns for pickleball.
Intended audience: Pickleball players who already know how to serve in a variety of ways that allow them to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents.
Technical objective: This lesson is not technical. No new strokes are taught. This skill taught in this lessons is analytical. Participants are taught to analyze the strategic benefits of serves they already know.
Tactical objective: Participants in this class already have a variety of serves in their tool chest. They can serve with top spin and slice, they can serve forehand and backhand, they can power-serve, short-serve, and lob-serve. This lesson is about analyzing the returns that each of these serves is getting them in order to capitalize on their advantages.
Warmup: 10-minute freestyle
Instructional segment: 45 minutes of pickleball drills with individual differential coaching.
Game segment: 30 minutes of serving games that emphasizes generating short returns.
Differential coaching: Not all groups who book this lesson will have the same composition. Not all students who participate in this lesson will have the same experience or abilities. Therefore the coach will make adjustments on the fly to tweak the lesson plan to best fit the group. The coach will also attempt to give each participant at least one thing to work on in order to improve moving forward.
