About

Brent Johner is a Calgary-based writer with more than two decades of freelance writing experience. His work has appeared in popular and scholarly publications.

Between 1997 and 2007, Brent was a regular contributor to the Calgary Herald. He now writes a monthly column for Calgary Gardening and makes periodic contributions to RSI magazine.

After training as an academic writer, first at the University of Alberta and then at the University of Calgary, Brent left the Ph.D. program in 1995 to return to a freelance writing career he had established in the early 1980s.

Over the past decade, he has come to specialize in confidential writing services. His clients are predominantly engineers and geologists who are recent immigrants to Canada.

Website Design

In late 1999, Brent accepted a contract with dot-com giant About.com, then the third largest Internet company in the world. He guided their Canadian History site (and later their Calgary site) until the Manhattan-based company shut down most Canadian operations two weeks after 9/11.

The training and experience Brent gained while working with About.com gave him the ability to build highly effective, human-presence websites. He now designs websites that move users through several stages to a desired commerical or political end.

In 2004, Brent combined his interest in racquet sports with his expertise on the Internet by launching Racquet Network — a fee-for-service enterprise focused on the racquet sports industry.

By applying the techniques alluded to in the previous paragraph, he was able to turn Racquet Network Network into the fastest growing racquet sports club in Calgary.
